Late Maizan Hassan Maniku (1953-2002), BSc (Zool), Dip Ed; Hassan Maniku was the founder and first Director of the MRC. From the very beginning of Marine Research Section in 1984 as it was called, to his retirement in early 1999, he was the force behind establishing the marine research in the Maldives. He won the President’s special award in recognition for his outstanding service for the country. The volume 6 of Maldives Marine Research Bulletin was dedicated to him. Ahmed Hafiz
Like Hassan Maniku, Hafiz’s career started at the Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture. Working at the Centre since the very begining, Mr. Hafiz was mentored by Hassan Maniku and became the Director in 1999. He remained as the Centre’s Director until 2004. He has been influential in expanding the fish taxonomic collection at MRC. The new record of triglid fish, Pterygotrigla (O) hafizi was named after him.
