Vision of MRC

12 May 2014

Through proper scientific research, be an important resource to assist the government, industry and the public in making informed decisions about the rational utilization of the country’s marine resources. To be a contributor and disseminator of knowledge that creates public awareness about the marine environment, which is critical to the well being of the nation.

Mission

To undertake policy driven strategic research, particularly on fisheries resources, mariculture and coral reefs, and make relevant information available to management authorities for sustainable development management of the resources.

To achieve this mission MRC will seek to:

  • Undertake collaborative research (both national and international) that would help generate new knowledge on marine resources.
  • Ensure adequate monitoring and assessments are undertaken to determine the impact of fishing activities and the status of the harvested stocks, non-target species and the ecosystems on which they depend.
  • Ensure ecologically sustainable fishing activities are managed in a way that is maintained in perpetuity.
  • Identify critical habitats for the conservation of living marine resources
  • Undertake research on mariculture with the view to supplement or replace capture reef fisheries and help to establish a mariculture industry in the Maldives.
  • Assist MOFAMR and relevant ministries and agencies by providing expert knowledge for the development and refinement of national marine resources policies.
