    We are pleased to announce that the coral reef restoration and rehabilitation work shop has been rescheduled.

  • Coral Bleaching Alert
    National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued a bleaching watch warning to Maldives via the Satellite Coral Bleaching Alert System, and a press-release has been subsequently issued by MRC in regards to the developing situation.

  • Review of the Status of Marine Turtles in the Maldives - 2016
    A recent review on the status of marine turtle populations in the Maldives is now published and available for download via this link. This review is based on data gathered from a citizen-science program developed in 2015, by Marine Research Centre with assistance from Project REGENERATE implemented by IUCN/Marine.

  • Pre-bleaching baseline surveys completed in Male’ atoll
    Marine Research Centre (MRC), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), collaborating under Project Regenerate, have completed pre-bleaching surveys to prepare for the predicted coral bleaching in the Maldives.

  • Inter Agency Task Force on Coral Bleaching formed
    The Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture with the direct advice of the Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Dr. Mohamed Shainee has formed Inter-Agency Coral Bleaching Task force  for the predicted bleaching to occur in the Maldives.

  • Maldives Pole and line Tuna Fishery: Livebait Fishery Review - 2015
    The pole-and-line tuna fishery was accredited by the Marine Stewardship Council as being sustainable in 2012 but with eight conditions, one of which concerned the quantity of livebait being harvested and another with the interaction of endangered, threatened and protected species (ETP) with the livebait fishery.

    Following a coral bleaching event observed in the Maldives, a joint effort was made by MRC and project REGENERATE of the IUCN to invite marine biologists, divers and marine enthusiasts to contribute to the reporting of coral bleaching being observed across the Maldives.
